Singing in the Studio | Help for first-time Vocal Sessions |
Maybe you’re a vocalist and it’s your first time recording in the studio. Here are some tips we hope will help you prepare and make the most of your time.
-
Preparation
To really help you prepare for a day of singing and recording, get plenty of sleep the night before. Make sure to rest up those vocal chords. Drinking lots of water will keep you hydrated and ready to go. Warm tea and honey is great to keep your throat happy. Have a clear plan of what you’re wanting to accomplish during your time in the studio. Know your song and know your parts before you go in.
-
Ask for what you need
Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask if you need the volume increased in your headphones, need the mic stand adjusted, need to take break, or need to make a change to the song. This is your song so make sure you like what you record. Feel free to communicate and be picky about it.
-
Relax
Sometimes recording can be a lot of work or take up a whole day. Remember to have fun and not stress. Enjoy what you do as a vocalist. Don’t be nervous. Be yourself and bring all your emotion, talent, and strengths to the table in the studio. Let your passion and heart come alive as you sing. Give it your all each take. Put your heart into it. Remember, it’s ok to make mistakes. Take your time to record something beautifully organic.

Big notes, small notes
Make sure that when you sing loud or hit higher notes to remember microphone technique. Take one step back from the mic to belt out the big notes, and “eat” the mic up close on the quiet singing parts.
